Instituto Superior de Economia e Gestão

The Instituto Superior de Economia e Gestão (ISEG) [University Institute of Economy and Management] has its roots in the Commerce Class, created in 1759 and transformed, in 1844, in the Commerce School, or Commercial Section of the Lisbon High-school. It is the descendent of the Instituto Industrial e Comercial de Lisboa, created in 1869, which started teaching graduate courses in 1884. In 1930 it was integrated in the Technical University of Lisbon.

Technical University of Lisbon

The Technical University of Lisbon (UTL) was created in 1930, as a confederation of older Faculties, and comprises, nowadays, those of Veterinary Medicine; Agricultural Sciences; Economics and Business Administration; Engineering, Social and Political Sciences; Architecture; and Human Kinetics.

Despite being one of the largest Portuguese State Universities, the UTL has always adopted a decentralised organisational model. All Faculties have an ample degree of autonomy in pedagogic, scientific, administrative and financial matters.

Lisbon

Lisbon is located at the estuary mouth of the River Tagus, on its right margin. It is a city of many hills and valleys.

The ancient Phoenicians, the Greeks and the Carthaginians had colonies in Lisbon. The Romans developed it. There are now several vestiges of the Roman presence. It was invaded by the barbarians and then by the muslims (719-1147). Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal, conquered it in 1147. It became the capital of Portugal in 1256. In the sixteenth century, with the portuguese discoveries, Lisbon became the comercial center of Europe. In 1755, a great earthquake with a tsunami destroyed the downtown, that was then reconstructed under the Prime Minister Marquês de Pombal. The Baixa Pombalina is an example of iluminist arquitecture, with its paralel and perpendicular roads.

Some of its attractions are: the Castle, the Belém Tower, the Jerónimos Monastery, the downtown (Baixa Pombalina) and the Parque das Nações. Near Lisbon, the romantic town of Sintra is also a very interesting site, with its castle, palaces and wood.
